Nana Koizumi

Nana Koizumi, is a trumpeter, vocalist, composer, educator, graphic designer, and a tourism ambassador of Kashihara City, originally from Nara, Japan. Nana first discovered the trumpet at the age of 10. Her early exposure to music in her junior high school’s brass band inspired her to excel on the instrument, and at the age of 13, she debuted as a feature soloist at a national marching competition. Inseparable from a life with music, Nana made the decision to pursue a career in music, graduating from the Osaka College of Music. During her time at university, she was sponsored to perform at a concert by the Kansai Trumpet Association, led local brass bands and taught private lessons and brass clinics.

Following her graduation, Nana made her jazz debut, and had her first introduction to the swing and fresh harmonies that came along with it. She became captivated by improvisation and the freedom it brings to paint different soundscapes, and began to pursue the genre more seriously. Encouraged by her fellow musicians, she taught herself to sing and began her journey as a jazz singer.

Nana found herself a regular performer at music events, jazz bars and hotels around the country. Some notable performances from that period include the Universal Studios Japan opening as well as a number of appearances in commercials and on the radio. Nana spent time mentoring younger musicians, passing her experience onto the next generation.

In 2018, Nana received Japan’s ‘Color Coordinate’ qualification, a recognition awarded to those who have demonstrated extensive knowledge and skills in color coordination. This allowed her to create materials like posters and logos for businesses, business cards and flyers by hand as she began working as a graphics designer. In November 2020, she made an original line of handmade tote bags called “hitoyasumi” or in English, “Let’s Take A Break”.

Her professional career has afforded her the chance to travel and perform throughout Japan and in 2014, Nana went to the United States, where she first learned about jazz. In 2016, she relocated to Vancouver, Canada where she continued performing and teaching, most notably as a performer in the prestigious annual ‘Canada Parade.’

After returning to Japan in 2018, she was invited to perform at the Midosuji Autumn Festival and performed in what is now known as the Guinness Book of World Record for the longest line of fanfare trumpeters. Nana currently performs extensively in the Kansai area where she is on call for various establishments in Universal Studios Japan and regularly makes guest appearances on various radio programs as a leader. At the forefront of jazz trumpeter/vocalists in Japan, Nana Koizumi’s innate ability to deliver breathtaking performances in any musical genre continues to uplift her audiences with her beautiful tone and captivating voice. In November of 2022, she finished 1st Runner-Up in the annual Okazaki Jazz Vocal Contest.

Nana’s life as a musician has made her a world traveler of sorts, as she performed in events and parties in music scenes across the globe, from New York, Los Angeles, Thailand, Korea and Canada until finally, in November 2022, she moved to Australia.

On International Jazz Day 2023 she performed at two renowned live venues in Sydney, Butchers Brew Bar and Lazybones Lounge, each to a full house. She’s since become a regular feature on Melbourne’s beloved and long-running PBS radio program, performing to an audience both in-studio and over the airwaves.

2024 brought many new adventure, beginning with in an event with "Sampa the Great," dubbed the Queen of Hip Hop, in a performance at Fed Square in March. Later in the month, Nana performed at the Alibaba EXPO at the International Convention Centre and went on to perform at the JAPAN EXPO in Melbourne in May 2024, the SydFest Independent Film Festival in June 2024, a return performance to the 2024 Melbourne Australian Sake Festival after debuting at the 2023 Sydney event and a performance at Sydney's Bastille Festival 2024.

In addition to her own performances, Nana also launched a project that showcases Japanese musical culture through jazz abroad. The "Japanese Music Project" aims to bridge Japan and Australia through music.
